Girl in Red at the iconic Greek Theatre in L.A.
Opening a night with some of the artists biggest songs is not something I traditionally expect but girl in red came to defy expectations. Kicking off the night with the title track from the touring album “DOING IT AGAIN BABY” followed with "bad idea!" she showed up to the night with an energy that caught me off guard a bit.
The show wasn’t smooth sailing from the start though. Technical issues nearly immediately plagued the stage with several instruments not working unexpectedly. Instead of letting frustration take over, girl in red turned the moment and introduced the crowd to the borderline slapstick comedy that the artist is famous for. Commenting on the May gray of L.A she said “This is California right? I’m from Norway and the weather is nicer there!”
Amidst the chaos, she chats with the crowd like old friends, sharing dreams of collabs with fellow artists like Chappel Roan and Renee Rap. It's these genuine moments that make you feel like you're part of something special. The crowd dressed to impress with red accent pieces as an homage to the artists name and others in comically large suits and neckties in reference to the artists wardrobe choices on stage.
And when the technical issues refused to quit, the setlist got a spontaneous makeover, trading big beats for intimate acoustic vibes. The girl in red effortlessly switches gears, showing off her undeniable musical talent. Just when you think you've got her figured out, the stage crew sorted the issues out and the energy immediately picks back up with genre bending guitar riffs followed by an infectiously happy energy.
As a performer she proved her worth with a stunt that shocked the Greek Theatre when the girl in red was elevated above the giant screen on stage and they belted notes from 50 feet in the air. The legendary Greek Theatre provided such a great backdrop for the feats. A stage production not only someone as nerdy about lighting as a photographer could appreciate. Staff friendly and crowd excited and respectful as well. I would recommend anyone check out girl in red, whether their hilarious promotion for the new album, the catchy album itself or her Doing It Again World Tour!
