Brooks Nielsen graced the stage of the Observatory North Park on a tour of his newest EP release “Couples 1”. A two song EP following Nielsen’s Debut Album “One Match Left”.
From the moment Nielsen stepped into the spotlight, it was clear that this would be a night to remember. Backed by his band, Nielsen wasted no time diving into a setlist filled with infectious southern California inspired tunes in front of a neon “Brooksy” sign lighting up their silhouettes.
The air crackled with energy as the band launched into their first song and release from the touring EP, “Tropical Cowboy" setting the tone for the evening with its irresistible groove. Nielsen’s guitarist brought out a slide on his guitar through many performances infusing the night with nostalgic western sounds overlaying Nielsen’s southern California inspired lyrics. The unmistakable sound of the theremin added an otherworldly dimension to the music.
Nielsen swayed around stage during the performances slowly removing layers of vintage coats and hats to then reveal he had broken a rib on tour days before. However, his love for the music couldn’t keep him off the stage.
As the night progressed, Nielsen brought out the legendary Karl Denson on saxophone, adding another layer of musical brilliance to the already electrifying performance. The crowd went wild while the sounds of brass harmonized with Nielsen’s voice and had its own solo.
They delved into "Going Gets Tough" by Nielsen’s other project, The Growlers. This being such a well known song, the crowd sang along and emanated a note of positivity and togetherness that was electric. Throughout the evening, it was impossible not to tap your foot and sway to the rhythm.
But it wasn't just the music that captivated the crowd; it was the entire experience. The group provided vintage clothing merch, transporting concert-goers back in time to an era of bygone charm and nostalgia. There was a display at the back of the venue with the phrase “You & I & The Moon” which fans got photos under together to commemorate their time visiting Brooks in town. Jampak had a great time covering the event. As always the staff at the Observatory in North Park were friendly and amazing. We look forward to the release of Brooks sophomore album coming hopefully soon.
